PayGround is pioneering a revolution in the Healthcare FinTech space, focused on simplifying healthcare payments for both providers and consumers. Driven by a mission to be the go-to digital wallet for healthcare, we’re an agile, forward-thinking team dedicated to solving problems that shouldn’t exist in the modern world. With a culture that values compassionate candor and continuous improvement, we offer an environment where you can thrive, innovate, and make a meaningful impact.

The Opportunity

We are in an exciting phase of transitioning our backend architecture from PHP to Node.js and C# running on AWS Lambdas. This is a pivotal moment in our evolution and a unique opportunity for a hands-on Staff Software Engineer (SE5) to leave a lasting imprint on our technology stack. You’ll work closely with a talented group of engineers, product managers, and designers, driving the transformation while elevating our platform’s capabilities to new heights. This role spans the full stack, but ideally, your prowess lies in backend engineering and DevOps.

Role Highlights

  • Backend Maestro: Your primary domain is backend engineering, where you excel in creating robust, scalable, and highly efficient systems. Your skills in languages like Node.js and C# are expected to be top-notch.
  • DevOps Experience: You bring along solid DevOps experience that equips you to troubleshoot and resolve production issues effectively. Your understanding of CI/CD pipelines, serverless architecture, and AWS infrastructure is second to none. You will have a small team of DevOps contractors/consultants to lean on, so you won’t be going it alone.
  • Frontend Knowledge: While frontend development isn’t your strongest suit, you possess a sufficient understanding of it to contribute as needed and help the team come up with solutions. Your past experience in ReactJS will be a valuable asset to our front-end team.

Responsibilities

  • Feature Development Collaboration: Collaborate closely with product managers and designers to accurately define, scope, and shepherd new software features from initial conception to production deployment.
  • Optimize Existing Codebase: Actively contribute to the extension and refinement of features primarily implemented in Node.js and C#, while guiding and aiding our frontend transition from Vue to React.
  • DevOps Contributions: Take ownership in maintaining and enhancing our CI/CD pipelines, troubleshoot deployment issues proactively, and spearhead security remediation within AWS.
  • API Development: Meticulously design and construct robust and resilient APIs, using Node.js and C#, catering to both internal and external stakeholders’ needs.
  • Cloud Architecture: Lead in architecting and deploying scalable solutions on AWS, leveraging serverless technologies like Lambdas, DynamoDB, and other managed services.
  • AWS CDK Savvy: Exhibit a strong grasp of AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) and spearhead best practices in Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), focusing on robust, scalable, and maintainable cloud architecture.
  • Enforce Best Practices: Rigorously uphold coding and design standards by actively participating in code reviews and design discussions, fostering a culture of excellence.
  • Lifecycle Thinking: Embrace a comprehensive approach to software engineering, taking ownership from frontend to backend, all the way through to the delivery into an observable production environment.
  • Mentorship: Assume the mentorship role by nurturing junior and mid-level engineers through targeted coaching, thereby fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Innovation Leadership: Take the helm of innovative initiatives, steering the team towards an efficient, scalable, and maintainable architecture and application ecosystem.
  • Startup Agility: Demonstrate flexibility by assuming diverse roles in a fast-paced startup environment, ranging from addressing escalated production issues to handling DevOps responsibilities.
  • Business Impact: Consistently deliver high-impact outcomes that substantially contribute to the success of team projects and the overall growth of the business.
  • Champion DORA Metrics: Lead efforts in optimizing DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) metrics, employing iterative process improvements to reach peak performance levels.
  • Strategic Technical Planning: Collaborate with senior leadership to align technological solutions and architectures with long-term business strategies, ensuring cohesion and growth.
  • Estimation & Timeliness: Show impeccable ability in accurately estimating project timelines and consistently meeting or exceeding deadlines.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Serve as a proficient technical liaison between engineering, product, and business units, ensuring seamless communication and project execution.
  • Documentation Excellence: Diligently author and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, facilitating code maintainability and team knowledge sharing.
  • Security Mindset: Prioritize implementing security best practices rigorously, in compliance with PCI, HIPAA, GDPR, and CCPA regulations, ensuring a robust and secure software ecosystem.

Qualifications

You thrive working in a fast-paced, high-performing environment and enjoy working on a variety of projects, along with:

  • Product Minded: Possess a keen understanding that a product-centric mindset is crucial for developing software solutions that offer true customer value, aligning engineering efforts with user needs.
  • Adaptable Performer: Thrive in high-velocity settings, demonstrating a remarkable ability to juggle multiple projects without compromising quality or vision.
  • Veteran Engineer: A minimum of 15+ years in software engineering, with a strong emphasis on backend architecture, microservices, and development best practices.
  • Compassionate Candor: Value kindness and open dialogue over the need to be ‘right,’ creating a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.
  • Psychological Safety Champion: Lead by example to cultivate a high-performing, psychologically safe engineering environment.
  • Diversity Advocate: Committed to leveraging a variety of perspectives for more robust problem-solving.
  • Poise Under Pressure: Maintain composure during stressful situations, infusing the team with a balanced sense of urgency.
